Volunteerism and giving back to our community is a spirit that has permeated Her Domain since it's inception. On this page we recognize the Her Domain members who have donated their skills, time and professional expertise to nonprofit organizations to support causes they believe in.

AIR Interactive Internet Web Relay
2004
- Team Super Glue included Her Domain members Betsy Thaggard and Virginia DeBolt. The team created a new site for Sara Hickman winning the 2004 Web Relay People's Choice Award!
- Team Daedalus, which included Her Domainers Marilyn Fenn and Sandy McCrory, created this new site for Bradley Kopp.
2003
- Sandra McCrory and Marilyn Fenn, were among those who participated in the AIR Interactive Rally as Team Daedalus. The team created a site for Actual Lives organization, and won 3rd place (honorable mention) in the AIR Interactive competition.
- Deb Robinson,Virginia DeBolt, and Betsy Thaggard and Sherri Wyche Fleming created this web site for the Austin Girls Choir.
- Sherri Wyche Fleming was part of Team-404 for the Fall 2003 project for Down Home Ranch. Sherri created the graphic design and much of the HTML, and helped train the team on HTML techniques and cross browser testing.
2002
- Four members of Her Domain, Sandra McCrory, Lisa Hinely, Marilyn Fenn and Paula Middleton, were part of a team that created an accessible web site for 1001 Nights Orchestra Web site:
- A team which included employees of a company headed by HD member Mary Haskett, HCI Training, created an accessible web site for a rising band - Paper Airplane.

Ashera Project is an innovative non-profit organization in Austin, Texas that aims to address several components of an adolescent's life in order to enhance his or her opportunities for success.

Austin Area Interreligious Ministries
Formerly Austin Metropolitan Ministries, AAIM is an interreligious collaboration of approximately 130+/- congregations in Austin (Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, BaHai, Mormon, etc.). AAIM operates numerous programs, everything from Hands on Housing, which rehabilitates homes for the elderly, marginalized and poor in East Austin, to Refugee Resettlement, which aids and assists in refugees from around the globe now living in the Austin Community.
Carol Grosvenor has donated her services to create ia logo for Austin Area Interreligious Ministries.
Austin Ballroom Dancers (ABD)
Austin Ballroom Dancers is a social welfare organization dedicated to promoting ballroom dancing by sponsoring dances, classes, and workshops. People of all ages enjoy our classes and dances, and as a non-profit organization, ABD is able to fulfill its mission at a reasonable cost to all participants. Non-members are always welcome at ABD, and a partner is not required to participate.
HD Member Sue Reading is "on the board of directors as publicity manager. Took over the office from Kathi Kimbriel, another Herdomainer, who first introduced me to ABD." (2003-2005)
The Austin Civic Orchestra provides affordable concerts and events to a diverse population, allowing all members of the community to have access to the arts.
Katie Nott designed collateral: mailers, ads, flyers and most promotional materials. Katie is also a member of the volunteer board. (2003-2005)
Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival (aGLIFF)
The Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival (aGLIFF), a Texas 501c3 nonprofit organization, is the oldest and largest festival of its kind in the Southwest. Founded in 1987, its mission is to increase positive awareness throughout the community about gay and lesbian lives and support the production and promotion of gay and lesbian international and regional films and videos.
Heather Baxter volunteered with crowd control at this annual film festival. Heather also helped organize silent auction at Annual Oscar Party fund raiser.
The Austin Screenwriters Group is a non-profit resource to serve local screenwriters, providing guidance and support in all areas of the field. We offer networking and marketing opportunities, critical feedback on works-in-progress, and a sense of community for our members.
Wendy Wheeler designed a logo, a brochure, and been active in the marketing efforts of the Austin Screenwriters Group. Wendy co-coordinated a writers' workshop that matched up aspiring writers with volunteer pros and offers workshop scholarships to high school student for ArmadilloCon. (A yearly science fiction convention by hosted the non-profit Fandom Association of Central Texas (FACT) which promotes science fiction and fantasy in Texas since 1983.)
Blue Dog Rescue is a volunteer organization whose purpose is to end the needless killing of homeless dogs. A 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, the group is funded by donations, fundraisers, and adoption fees, that works to find permanent, loving homes for homeless dogs. All donations are Federal Tax deductible.
Kelly Holmes is a foster for the rescue group, which means she takes dogs into her home temporarily until they find a forever home.
Breast Cancer Resource Center of Austin
Created by breast cancer survivors, this center serves women with breast cancer as well as their family and friends, and exists to enable women to be active, knowledgeable participants in their health care. A clearinghouse for information on resources in the Austin area that provide services for breast cancer detection, education, treatment and support.
Juliana Lynn has supported many organizations through volunteering, including maintaining the web site for assign maintain the web site for Breast Cancer Resource Center of Austin.
The Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, Inc. (CAFB) is a non-profit organization that provides food to human service agencies serving people in need throughout Central Texas by receiving and storing truckloads of donated food and other grocery products.
Judith Weiss has donated graphic design and envelope stuffing services to Capitol Area Food Bank.
Dewey Winburne Community Service Award
The Dewey Winburne Community Service Award celebrates the vision that technology is society's most effective tool to level the playing field between the haves and the have-nots. Candidates need to primarily live in the Central Texas area and be involved with a grass-roots effort to use convergent media to better the lives of this community's less fortunate citizens.
Her Domainers Monica Roesch and Bianca Bickford were nominated for the 2003 Dewey Award
Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas/Buddy Walk
The mission of DSACT is to provide support and resources to individuals with Down syndrome, their families, professionals, and the community.
Katie Nott designed the 2004 Austin chapter Buddy Walk logo for t-shirt and banners.
Eden Park Academy is a free public charter school serving Texas children and their families in southern Travis and northern Hays Counties.
Donna Kidwell built a database for Eden Park Academy, a nonprofit charter school. "I populated the databases with businesses within a seven mile radius of the school, and built it in such a way that they could partition out pieces for their fund raising efforts."
GENaustin.org (formerly The Ophelia Project)
GENaustin isdedicated to helping adolescent girls develop and maintain healthy self-esteem and leadership skills and by facilitating programs and providing resources that empower girls to be true to themselves and think critically about the media and girls' roles in society.
Heather Robinson did web design and all graphics for the web site for The Ophelia Project (a team of students did all the HTML and content).
Sherri Wyche Fleming is current web Guru and co-administrator for this non-profit and web graphic designer."I also provide usability and accessibility skills and train other web team volunteers on HTML and CSS. I created the intranet from scratch and maintain the look and feel of the site originally designed by Milkshake Media." (2005)
Grassroot Soccer Grassroots Soccer is an international AIDS awareness and educational organization. Founded in 2002, by current and former professional soccer players, their mission is to mobilize the global soccer community to combat the AIDS epidemic in Africa.
Beth Wilson "built a database with a web interface via which they can keep track of all their staff, contacts and donations. Since the organization is spread over the world, it was important for them to have a web accessible contact database. People interested in the organization can fill out a form on their web site which will automatically insert their information into the database and assign them to a staffer for followup."
Girlstart works to encourage and empower girls in math, science, engineering, and technology. It provides after school programs as well as Saturday and Summer day camps at the Girlstart Tech Center, with programming ranging from exploring the physics of marshmellow guns, creating their own business, and making websites.
Bianca Bickford began as a volunteer and donated two websites to Girlstart, where she became an employee in 2001 and is currently the webmaster and network administrator.
Andrea Hamblin has taught Saturday camps for Girlstart on a variety of topics and has served as a greeter at trade shows and events.
Austin Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to put our faith in action by building affordable, quality houses with families in need to eliminate poverty.

An online community, the mission of Her Domain is to encourage and support women who embrace the culture and technology of the Internet as a vehicle for creative and professional pursuits. Women in the Austin and surrounding areas help each other to find jobs, find employees, compare notes on their respective trades, and learn from each other in an unintimidating environment.

House Rabbit Resource Network (HRRN)
A non-profit organization headquartered in Austin that promotes rabbit welfare. Primary activities include educating people about the care of rabbits, especially as indoor companion animals; placing rescued rabbits from area animal shelters in foster homes; and facilitating rabbit adoptions.
Gina McAskill Scherffius, a founding board member and past president of House Rabbit Resource Network, helps create content for the HRRN Web site, coordinate the organization's incoming e-mail, and answer questions online for the group through AllExperts.com. She cares for a rotating population of non virtual foster rabbits in her home.
Kathy Bateman, a current board member of HRRN, helps answer phone inquiries, holds monthly rabbit education and adoption days, checks on the bunnies at Town Lake Animal Center, set up the volunteer email list, and generally lends a hand when needed. (2003 to 2005)
The Humane Society SPCA of Austin & Travis County is a non-profit organization dedicated to re-homing orphaned animals, promoting the human-animal bond, educating children and adults about responsible pet ownership and preventing pet overpopulation.
Heidi Hintz has provided volunteer assistance for the Humane Society web site (and it ended up turning into a paying gig!). She also volunteered to create a site for a local Homeowners Association.
Joy and Action (formerly Austin Bell Ringers) Joy and Action is a program in nursing, assisted Living, and retirement homes dedicated to improving the mental, physical and emotional health of senior citizens through a fun and engaging bell-ringing program.

Born out of the Accessibility Internet Rally for Austin (AIR-Austin), Knowbility provides educational and employment opportunities in Information Technology for youth and adults with disabilities and other disadvantaging conditions. Knowbility also helps educate companies about how to recruit and accommodate youth and adults with disabilities as employees.
Sharron Rush directs Knowbility, and the Accessibility Internet Rally for Austin (AIR-Austin). The AIR event is held yearly in Austin, and numerous Her Domainers volunteer at the event each year.
Kristian Gallagher has volunteered as a web designer and event day helper with Knowbility/AIR-Austin.

The Metropolitan Austin Interactive Network is a non-profit organization whose mission dedicated to information sharing and communication among people and organizations.
Sherri Wyche Fleming designed the visuals for the current web site including the logo.
Manos de Cristo provides Christian care for the body, mind, and spirit of those who have difficulty finding and receiving access to other means of dental care and emergency services. Manos de Cristo serves the working poor, immigrants, the unemployed, the disabled, and the homeless, and provides English as a Second Language Class and Citizenship Classes.
Manos de Cristo also serves the community through a Clothes Corner and Food Pantry, and operates the only low-cost dental clinic in Austin. The staff of dentists and dental assistants have over 5,000 patient visits a year.
Lisa Hinely is "a regular English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor. I also work with the annual project to provide school supplies and back-to-school clothes". (2000 - 2005)
Million Mom March-Central Texas Chapter
A national grassroots, chapter-based organization dedicated to preventing gun death and injury and supporting victims and survivors of gun trauma. It's goal is "to educate America about the need for sensible gun laws."
Amanda Adams has worked as a volunteer web designer with the Central Texas Chapter of the Million Mom March. "I even got the gig through Her Domain!"
North Central Caregivers
Gwynn Teal Carpenter and her partner "decided we needed to give back to the Austin community so we volunteer with the North Central Caregivers as drivers for the elderly. We take them to appointments with doctors , beauty shop, grocery buying and other places. The elder in our society just wants to be independent as long as possible and giving up your vehicle changes the way you feel about control of your life. we have a blast visiting with these wonderful folks!"
The nation's oldest child abuse prevention organization dedicated to strengthening families and building caring communities that support safe and nurturing homes for all children.
Carol Grosvenor has donated graphics services to create a logo for Parents Anonymous.
people4people People4People is a talented group of dedicated volunteers working to raise money and community awareness for People's Community Clinic - a non-profit clinic providing quality, affordable healthcare for under- and uninsured adults and children in the Austin area for over 30 years. In just four years, P4P has raised more than $350,000 through fundraising events featuring Austin-area companies, organizations, and individuals coming together to help fellow Austinites.

Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, a nonprofit volunteer organization,
is the nation's educational library serving people who cannot effectively
read standard print because of visual impairment, dyslexia, or other physical
disability. Our mission is to create opportunities for individual success
by providing, and promoting the effective use of, accessible educational
materials.

Satchidananda Ashram - Yogaville, Buckingham, VA
Regarded by many as an apostle of peace, Sri Gurudev serves as an example of the teachings of yoga and its goal of self-realization.
Karen Kreps designed produced this web siteKaren is currently working for the same organization to create a new site about a center for world peace through religious understanding at http://lotus.org and also helped to edit liner notes for the CD-reissue of a long-playing vinyl record they produced that includes the opening address of the Woodstock festival.
Save Our Springs Alliance
Karen Kreps created a simple informational site for Austin’s Save Our Springs Alliance for an umbrella organization of 12 Central Texas environmental group. "I also worked on a very large Power Point presentation for SOS that was used in a presentation that brought a half million-dollar donation."
SafePlace exists to end rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence.
Rachel Hartman has volunteered her time with SafePlace. "We rattled our network of geek friends and managed to arrange for free web hosting and the assistance of a graphic artist and some HTML slingers." Since April 1999, the site has been visited by well over 10,000 people, from Texas, from all over the United States, and in other countries.
Sustainable Food Center (SFC)
SFC's mission is to create a food-secure community by improving access to local, healthy and affordable food for children and adults in Central Texas. SFC's programs and services target low-income, health-at-risk individuals and families and annually impact more than 7,000 children and adults.
Sally Duncan built and maintained the Sustainable Food Center web site for two years (it was recently redesigned by other volunteers as part of AIR-Austin. which she has also participated in several times!).
The mission of St. Theresa's School is to develop elementary and middle school students to their full potential by educating them in a Catholic and academically excellent environment.
Carol Grosvenor has donated her services to create invitations, logos, and other materials for St. Theresa's School.
The National Organization to Treat is a non-profit public charity supporting research to develop treatments for Ataxia Telangiectasia, a rare genetic syndrome which causes progressive neurological deterioration, immune deficiency, and cancer in children who carry two copies of a mutated A-T gene.
Traci Rachal Reece provided technical support, web site design and content management as a board member from 1998-2000.
The Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) promotes racial, social, and economic justice through education and litigation. TCRP strives to foster equality, secure justice, ensure diversity, and strengthen communities. TCRP was founded in 1990 as part of Oficina Legal del Pueblo Unido, a non-profit community-based foundation located in South Texas.
Her Domainers Karen Cook and Veronica Barrio "donated HOURS of their time to the web site for this nonprofit', reports Andrea D Buckley, Director of Community Outreach and Development. "The basic design and template was designed by Karen and Veronica designed our event page and spent numerous hours explaining FTP and helping me clean up our directory structure and rolling out our new and updated site. Both of them taught me pretty much everything I know about web design and creation. I can’t even begin to tell you how patient they were with me -- I am eternally grateful."

Through a volunteer staff, West Austin Caregivers provides, at no cost to the senior clients, support services which aid them in living independently in the community. Volunteers provide transportation (using their own vehicles) to medical appointments, grocery shopping, errands & personal business activities.

The Women's Advocacy Project is a statewide nonprofit legal organization that promotes access to justice for Texas women and children in need.
Suzanne Lucignani participated in AIR-Austin in September 1999, as part of a volunteer team that developed a web site for the Women's Advocacy Project. The project is a state-wide nonprofit legal organization providing free legal advice, and working to expand legal education and promote access to justice for Texas women in need.
The Writers' League of Texas promotes the art of writing by supporting writers in their artistic and professional goals. For a more extensive description of our services, read "Serving the Whole State."
Wendy Wheeler coordinated a study group of the Austin Writers League for 15 years, judged several of their contests, and mentored student referrals.
